Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

If you have a Silhouette or Cricut machine then this project is for you. Create a Thanksgiving-themed stencil using a Print Art/SVG file design. Apply to your board, add some paint and viola! Once you see how easy it is your creativity is limitless as there are so many designs to choose from the embroidery designs site.

Step 1:

Gather all materials and review instructions before beginning. This project requires a Silhouette or Cricut machine.

Step 2:

Paint your board using your choice of color. I spray painted the board in this tutorial a farmhouse gray. Let dry.

Step 3:

While your board is drying…Bring your Print Art/SVG file design into your Silhouette or Cricut machine program. Follow your machines instructions on how to “cut” design to create a stencil. Enlarge design to 10.5"x 10.5"

Silhouette Owners: If your Silhouette machine has not been updated to allow working with an SVG ( cuttable ) file.. you can work around this by downloading the Print Art design as a JPG/JPEG file. Bring it into your Silhouette program. Enlarge design to 10.5" x 10.5" .

Step 4:

(Updated Silhouette owners skip this step)

Open your "Trace Window". Select Trace Area by highlighting the design. Click on " Trace" to create the cuttable file.

Click onto the color design image and move to outside of the work area and delete. You will now see the outline of the cuttable design file. Follow your machines instructions on how to "cut" design to create a stencil.

Step 5:

Once the vinyl is cut you will need to “weed” out ( reverse weeding) the cut vinyl to create your stencil.

Step 6:

Apply transfer paper to the front of the weeded vinyl stencil.

Step 7:

Remove back adhesive, center and apply to dry board. Fingertip press to adhere to board smoothing out the bubbles from around the lettering/design. Remove your top layer transfer paper slowly. If any of the design/ vinyl lettering sticks to your transfer paper just slowly push it back down to the board using your finger or tool.

Step 8:

Your stencil and board are complete and ready to paint. Using your desired colors paint the open areas of your stencil. Let dry. Approx 20 – 30 minutes. Longer if needed.

Step 9:

When completely dry, slowly remove the stencil from the board. If there are still pieces of vinyl adhered to your board, remove with your tool pick. The acrylic paint is very forgiving so if some of the paint seeped under your stencil, using a wet wipe, carefully remove the excess paint from the outlined area.

Viola! Your wood art is now complete. Attach a picture hanging hardware to hang in your gallery of wall pictures or pick up a frame stand and place on a table.
